Why You Should Stay Cautious with USD1 and WLFI Despite the Positive Talk
So the hype you're seeing is only half the story. Quick sort first: USD1 is the actual stablecoin, pegged to the dollar. WLFI is a separate token, the one people are trading and speculating on. Both come out of World Liberty Financial, the Trump family's crypto company. That last part is really the root of most of the risk here, more than anything wrong with the tech itself.
Start with who owns it, since it explains a lot of what follows. A Trump business entity owns 60% of World Liberty and is entitled to 75% of revenue from coin sales. Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. are actively involved in running the company, and a UAE royal family entity owns a 49% stake. That UAE deal was signed four days before the inauguration, and the first payment reportedly sent around $187 million to Trump-linked entities. So the sitting president's family profits directly if this succeeds, while his own administration writes the rules for the industry. That's not just internet chatter either: Senators Warren and Waters have formally pressed the SEC on it, pointing to the SEC's quiet decision to pause a fraud case against crypto figure Justin Sun shortly after he invested $75 million in WLFI. Separately, senators flagged reports that WLFI allegedly sold tokens to entities tied to North Korea and Russia, which is a real anti-money-laundering concern, not just a PR one. WLFI and its founders have denied any wrongdoing on the conflict-of-interest point.

Then there's what actually happened this year. In April 2026, WLFI's own treasury put up 5 billion of its own tokens as collateral to borrow around $75 million in stablecoins, on a lending platform whose co-founder happens to advise WLFI. That drained the USD1 lending pool to about 93% utilization, so regular depositors couldn't withdraw their own funds. People online compared it to FTX-style circular dealing, and the token dropped to a record low. WLFI defended it at the time as a normal borrowing position. Then WLFI said it had repaid part of the loan, then minted $25 million in fresh USD1, which made people wonder if they'd just printed money to pay themselves back. A few days later, WLFI proposed unlocking 62 billion tokens that were originally sold as permanently locked, with a portion of the insider allocation burned. A lot of people read the timing as insiders getting an exit right as the price was cratering.
Separately, Justin Sun, the Tron founder who put in $75 million and became an advisor, had his tokens frozen in September 2025 through a blacklist function that wasn't disclosed to investors — a stake that dropped from over $107 million at the time of the freeze to $43-60 million by the time he sued in April. He's suing for fraud and breach of contract; WLFI countersued him for defamation. Still working through court. Worth remembering: a "governance" token the team can freeze whenever they want isn't as decentralized as it sounds.
On the regulatory side, the GENIUS Act set federal rules for stablecoins in 2025 — full reserve backing, monthly disclosures, licensed-issuer status. It didn't touch the conflict-of-interest issue though. Warren has asked regulators to pause WLFI's pending bank charter application until Trump divests his stake, and the bigger crypto market bill, the CLARITY Act, was expected to miss its Senate floor vote this week and slide into fall.
One more thing, even though it's not a USD1 incident specifically: other stablecoins have lost their peg this year after someone compromised admin keys and minted unbacked tokens. StablR's two coins depegged in May after an attacker seized control of the minting contract, and Resolv's USR crashed over 70% in March the same way. USD1 hasn't had anything like that happen. It's just a reminder that solid reserves on paper don't protect you if the minting controls get hacked.
Financially, the wider ecosystem's had a rough stretch too. WLFI's payments arm was reportedly in talks to sell for as little as $15 million, down from a $750 million valuation, after a $271.5 million loss tied to the token's price crash. WLFI itself peaked around $0.33 in September 2025 and now trades about 84% below that, around 5 cents. It also doesn't trade in deep markets, so price swings can be sharp.
The actual stablecoin mechanics of USD1 look pretty normal, real reserves, real custodian, nothing broken there. The risk is everything around it. Concentrated ownership by a sitting president's family, a treasury that already used its own tokens in a way that trapped depositors, a lawsuit over frozen funds, and regulators still fighting over the conflict of interest. None of it's speculation. It's all public record, and most of it's still playing out.
