In-Depth Analysis of the Ethereum Market: Bears Have the Upper Hand in the Short Term, but Fundamental Support Remains
I. Price Action Analysis
As of 10:00 p.m. Beijing time on October 12, Ethereum’s spot price stood at $2,528, down approximately 0.46% over the past 24 hours. On the hourly chart, the price has traded in a narrow, slightly weaker range over the past five hours. During the morning session, it retreated from around $2,556 to a low of $2,514, then found some buying support near $2,520 and edged back up to around $2,530.
Ethereum’s recent price action has been shaped by a mix of factors. On the fund-flow front, spot Ethereum ETFs have recorded net outflows for nine consecutive trading days, with cumulative outflows of approximately $542 million, placing sustained pressure on the price. On the fundamental side, however, Bitmine purchased an additional 12,532 ETH, bringing its total holdings to 6.02 million ETH, or approximately 4.9% of the circulating supply. Continued accumulation by companies is providing some support for the price. In addition, Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission approved the launch of a spot Ethereum ETF starting October 16, a positive signal for adoption in the regional market.
II. Technical Indicator Analysis
Hourly technical indicators suggest that Ethereum’s short-term outlook is bearish.
Regarding moving averages, the 7-hour moving average has fallen to $2,541, above the current price and acting as resistance. The 25-hour moving average is around $2,545, while the 99-hour moving average is around $2,506. Short-term moving averages are beginning to cross below longer-term ones, showing signs of a death cross and suggesting that the short-term downtrend may continue.
For the MACD, the histogram has turned negative at -4.75, the fast line has fallen to 3.15, and the slow line to 7.91. The MACD histogram has been negative for five consecutive periods and continues to widen, indicating that bearish momentum is gradually strengthening. As with Bitcoin, Ethereum’s MACD is also dominated by bearish signals, although the pace of expansion has slowed somewhat.
For the RSI, the 6-period RSI is 39.01, the 12-period RSI is 45.04, and the 24-period RSI is 49.86. All three RSI lines are in neutral-to-weak territory and have not entered the oversold zone, suggesting that there may still be room for further downside from an RSI perspective.
For the KDJ, the K value has fallen to 27.5, the D value to 34.9, and the J value to just 12.7. All three KDJ lines are in relatively low territory but have not reached extreme oversold levels, suggesting that further short-term adjustment may be needed.
The Bollinger Bands show the price trading between the middle band at $2,546 and the lower band at $2,519, closer to the lower band. The upper band is around $2,573. The price is in the lower half of the Bollinger Bands, reflecting short-term weakness.
Among the composite indicators, 10 of 15 quantitative factors are signaling a long position, four are signaling a short position, and one is neutral, putting the proportion of long signals at 66.67%. However, the composite indicator value is zero, its signal direction is short, and its historical win rate is 74.47%. This contrasts sharply with Bitcoin and indicates that Ethereum’s current technical picture is weaker than Bitcoin’s.
III. Market Sentiment Analysis
The main tension facing the Ethereum market is the tug-of-war between institutional outflows and corporate accumulation. Nine consecutive days of ETF net outflows reflect caution among some institutional investors in the short term, possibly due to uncertainty in the broader macroeconomic environment. Escalating geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, surging oil prices, and concerns about global trade tensions are all contributing to more conservative allocations to risk assets overall.
However, on-chain data shows that more than $53 million has rotated from Bitcoin into Ethereum via DEXs, indicating that some large holders are accumulating Ethereum on dips. The Ethereum Foundation recently transferred 4,393 ETH, worth approximately $11.13 million, to exchanges, adding somewhat to concerns about selling pressure.
Overall, Ethereum’s short-term technical outlook is weak, and the composite indicator has shifted to a sell signal. Investors should watch the strength of support around $2,514. If this level is decisively broken, the price could fall further toward the 99-hour moving average near $2,506. However, if the price stabilizes in the current range and ETF outflows slow, a short-term bottom may form. Investors are advised to manage their position sizes at this stage and wait for clearer directional signals.
Among today’s top-performing tokens, GTC stood out, trading at $0.30067, up 59.21% in 24 hours. RSR followed, priced at $0.002382, up 45.69%. The W token was quoted at $0.02418, up 35.92%.
