🧊 THE BINANCE HACKER TRIED TO USE AAVE AS AN ATM

Before the stolen stablecoins got frozen, one exploiter wallet moved fast:

→ deposited about $60M USDT into Aave V3 Ethereum
→ borrowed 19,762 WETH, roughly $44.6M
→ all between 20:58 and 21:01 UTC, about 40 minutes before the first freeze

Then Aave hit the brakes on everything it runs. 175 V3 reserves across 16 networks and 117 V4 reserves across 4 networks are frozen. No new deposits, no new borrowing. Withdrawals and repayments still work.

Aave says its contracts were not touched, and Stani Kulechov says there is no bad debt because the position is over-collateralized with stable collateral.

So the attacker swapped "freezable" USDT for ETH that nobody can freeze. Smart move, and it shows exactly where DeFi is exposed when a CEX gets drained.

Was freezing all markets the right call by Aave, or an overreaction that punishes normal users?

$AAVE pulled off a full V. Two days ago one 4h candle dumped it from about 133.4 to 118.3 (wick to 115), and now it's back at 131.3, up around 9% on the day with $121M of futures volume.

What I like less is the positioning. Binance OI is flat around $52M, actually below the ~$56M it had before the dump, so this bounce isn't fresh leverage piling in. Funding has drifted slightly negative (about -0.01%), but top traders are still roughly 63% long by position. Some shorts are leaning on it, the bigger accounts aren't selling.

On the NanoTrading Fire chart 4h, the liquidation heatmap has dense bands stacked right above at 133-135 and again around 137-140, which is where price broke down from. Below, there's a thick pocket at 124-129 that the bounce left behind.

My read: a clean break of 133-135 probably sweeps toward 138-140 fast. Losing 128 and that lower pocket comes into play. I'm watching how $AAVE handles 133 before doing anything 👀

Is this V the real recovery, or does 133-135 cap it again?

LlamaRisk's October 30 reopening update says existing V4 positions keep their current collateral settings until a new borrow, a collateral withdrawal or a collateral toggle moves them to new settings. Under those settings, the affected assets have a collateral factor of zero and cannot add borrowing power.

The list covers USDT, USDC, USDT0, POL, WAVAX, sAVAX, XAUt, PAXG and OP, including their bridged and wrapped versions. The restriction concerns using them as collateral, not borrowing those tokens.

V3 treats existing positions using these assets differently: their liquidation thresholds stay unchanged, so this parameter change does not alter their health factors. They still lose the ability to add new borrowing power from the affected collateral.

This is the plan described in LlamaRisk's update labelled 13:49 UTC, not confirmation that every market has reopened.
