MSCI changes its filters: potential removals of crypto treasury companies to be decided in November
On October 15, 2026, at 20:48 GMT, MSCI announced that it will adopt a methodology to exclude non-operating companies from its global investable market indexes. The review will take effect at the close of November 30.
The official appendix lists Strategy, Metaplanet, and Upexi as potential deletions. SharpLink is under review. These are different categories, and the final list will be published on November 11: individual removals have not yet been confirmed.
The methodology first assesses operating assets and, if a company fails that screen, applies five financial ratios. It also includes margins and temporary conditions. The former 50% digital-asset threshold was part of interim measures that will expire; it is not a new automatic removal rule.
The appendix uses financial information as of September 30 and market capitalizations as of October 9. This is an assessment based on cutoff dates, not a real-time snapshot.
Exclusion from an index does not mean a company will stop being publicly traded, nor does it require the company to sell its treasury’s cryptocurrencies. It may, however, prompt adjustments by funds that track the index and put pressure on the affected stocks; the scale depends on those funds’ exposure.
Market update: at 17:51 UTC on 16/10, Binance showed BTC at 81,375.43 USDT (-1.32% in 24 hours) and ETH at 2,417.43 USDT (-1.28%). These moves do not prove a reaction to the announcement. Attention is focused on the final list and flows in the stocks, without mechanically extrapolating them to token prices.
