Pearl PRL: Pulls back about 7% from its $2.10 high; selling pressure is just as real amid the AI computing-power narrative

After hitting an all-time high of $2.10 on October 14, Pearl ($PRL ) is currently trading at around $1.95 (BitScreener data as of 10-19), down about 7%. Its market cap is approximately $683 million, with a weekly gain of +43.44% and 24-hour trading volume of around $8.53 million.

There is a clear narrative behind the rally: so-called Proof-of-Useful-Work replaces the hash calculations of traditional PoW with the matrix multiplications used in AI training and inference, reportedly letting GPUs “kill two birds with one stone.” Perpetual futures went live on October 10, and the project became a hot topic on crypto Twitter during Token2049, as liquidity followed the spreading narrative.

But the supply-side figures also deserve a closer look. On-chain data from October 2 showed that about 332 million tokens had been mined, or 15.8% of the 2.1 billion cap. At an output of around 1.02 million tokens per day, the current price implies roughly $2 million in potential daily selling pressure entering the market. The official mining pool takes a 20% cut, further raising the cost of holding.

Risk factors: Security researcher Abhinaba Basu recently pointed out that the main mining client lacks substantive AI code (as reported by Parameter on October 15). The project team has yet to release the findings of a public code audit. How well the narrative aligns with the code is something that needs continued scrutiny in this cycle.

My take: The concept is fresh, sentiment is strong, and the selling pressure is real. In the short term, this is still a sentiment-driven market, so anyone chasing the rally should weigh the pace of supply and follow developments in the computing-power debate.

It uses GPU matrix multiplication for both AI inference and PRL mining: the protocol doesn’t check whether the computation is genuine, customer-paid inference, so even random matrices can count as valid work.
💡 Here’s an easy point to confuse: the claim that mining overhead is below 5% refers to the extra cost of generating and verifying proofs of computation. It doesn’t mean inference GPUs can produce as much mining power as dedicated mining machines. Inference services also have to meet customer latency requirements, and especially when a model generates tokens one at a time, GPUs may not be able to run at full capacity continuously.

🔥 The real difference may come down to revenue sources. Dedicated miners rely mainly on mining rewards to cover hardware, electricity, and operating costs. Inference providers already earn revenue from customers, so mining rewards can be extra income. The more intense the competition for rewards, the more of a buffer the latter have. However, electricity prices, hardware efficiency, and capital costs also affect the outcome, so pure miners won’t disappear overnight.

👀 Pearl’s mainnet launched in April 2026, and PRL uses a gradually declining issuance schedule. The project has also partnered with Together AI to offer a Gemma inference API at a discount of over 25%. Whether inference businesses can contribute more mining-eligible computation depends on how well they handle batching, scheduling, and GPU utilization.
