📰 French AI company Mistral AI announces the completion of a €3 billion Series D funding round, with a post-money valuation of over €21 billion. The company says this is the largest equity financing round to date for a European technology company.
🔥 The lineup for this round is also quite formidable: Samsung Electronics leads the investment, with the Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT and existing shareholder PSG Equity co-leading. Among the new investors are Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Honestly, being able to put names like Samsung, BlackRock, Nvidia, ASML, and Salesforce Ventures in the shareholder roster at the same time makes Mistral AI’s weight in Europe’s AI space hard to ignore. Existing investors such as a16z, BNP Paribas, DST Global, and Lightspeed also continue to participate, and the incumbent shareholders are not missing.
💡 This €3 billion isn’t just meant for valuation-story purposes. The funding will be used for cutting-edge model research, expansions of compute capacity and infrastructure, as well as commercialization and international market development. Mistral AI’s business currently covers 20 countries, serves more than 125 enterprises, and its customers include Airbus, ASML, and HSBC.
👀 European homegrown AI companies are accelerating to address their shortcomings in models, compute, and commercialization. Whether Mistral AI’s financing this time can truly help it capture global market share is the most worth watching part going forward. Do you think it can become a key player for Europe in its fight against US AI giants?
