Europe’s digital euro isn’t just about making payments easier. It’s also about who controls the money people use every day.

ECB President Christine Lagarde says the digital euro will complement cash, as Europe looks to strengthen its position against private stablecoins.

My take: stablecoins have already shown how quickly digital payments can evolve. The real challenge for the ECB is convincing people that a central bank digital currency offers enough value without compromising privacy or convenience.

The bigger question is: will people choose the digital euro because they trust it, or simply because it becomes part of everyday payments?
