$DELL fell 11.3% yesterday, closing at 507.93 and becoming the S&P 500โs biggest decliner. Trading volume was 11.7 million shares, about 1.65 times the 20-day average. Yet Barclays cut its price target by just $29, from $603 to $574. The stock lost $64.5 in a single dayโmore than twice the size of the analystโs target cut.
In the same note, Barclays downgraded Hewlett Packard Enterprise and NetApp from Overweight to Equal Weight. The reason wasnโt that thereโs no business in AI servers; it was that meaningful AI inflection at the enterprise level hasnโt materialized yet, and current enterprise revenue growth mostly reflects higher memory prices being passed on to customers. Barclays itself still forecasts AI server revenue of $75 billion this year, triple last yearโs figure. Itโs cutting its valuation and timeline assumptions, not wiping out the orders. Overnight, across the same AI infrastructure chain,
$CRWV fell about 15%, while Cipher and Iren each dropped around 12%. Expectations for financing costs moved higher, and the downgrade became a ready-made excuse to sell. Equipment stock
$AMAT had already posted high-volume declines the previous day; selling pressure across the chain had been building even before last nightโs open.
The technical picture is even more striking: the stock closed at 507.93, decisively breaking below the lower Bollinger Band at 518.73, while ending near the 50-day EMA at 514.8. The MACD histogram plunged from -0.95 to -5.56, signaling a sharp momentum reversal. The intraday range was $44.8, about 1.5 times ATR(14). The RSI was only 41.9, so even an 11% plunge didnโt push it into oversold territory. After-hours trading briefly took it down to around 498, suggesting selling pressure didnโt immediately let up after the closing bell.
My take: this was a liquidity-driven sell-off, with higher rate expectations and fears about AI infrastructure financing combining to make the downgrade a triggerโnot the end of the enterprise AI hardware cycle. Until the 502.32 low is broken, Iโll treat rallies as short covering. A daily close back above the lower Bollinger Band at 518.73 would be the first sign that some of the forced selling has cleared. Looking further ahead, the new $574 price target is still about 13% above the current price, but thatโs an analystโs number, not a support level the market has accepted. I donโt own DELL, and Iโm not adding at this level.
