Bitcoin mining difficulty is set to rise by approximately 6.7% this week, its largest increase since June; however, the production cost for miners according to JPMorgan is US$85,000, and a price below this level implies that a significant portion of the industry is operating under negative margins or with direct operating losses unless they have access to extremely cheap energy sources.
When the market price remains below the production cost and, at the same time, difficulty rises, less efficient miners face a crossroads: shut down obsolete equipment, liquidate accumulated BTC reserves to cover operating expenses such as electricity and maintenance, or seek alternatives such as redirecting infrastructure toward artificial intelligence.
