$BABY #baby …. surprised me most in Babylon’s slashing design was not the penalty itself. It was the fact that the operator identity does not really get a second life.

In many PoS systems, punishment is temporary. A validator is jailed, the problem is fixed, and the operator can eventually return.

Babylon treats equivocation differently.

If a Finality Provider double-signs, its voting power drops to zero and the instance is marked permanently SLASHED. the EOTS private key can be exposed, and delegated stake tied to that provider may become eligible for slashing under the protocol’s rules.

The important part is what happens afterwards.

There is no normal recovery path for that identity. The same key cannot simply be restored to the active set once the penalty has been paid.

i think that changes the psychology of the role. The protocol is not only charging operators for bad behaviour. It is making certain behaviour terminal.

That is much harsher than ordinary jailing, but it also makes the accountability harder to treat as a temporary inconvenience.

That is where the design becomes harder to judge.

a recoverable system preserves operator continuity. Babylon gives up some of that flexibility in exchange for a cleaner signal: once an identity has equivocated, the network never has to trust it again.

Maybe that discipline keeps the Finality Provider set honest. maby be it also makes the active set more fragile if serious mistakes, key failures, or compromised infrastructure accumulate over time.

The architecture can define permanent removal very clearly. The harder question is whether the network can absorb enough of those removals without narrowing the operator base too far.
