October has more than $1.3 billion in token unlocks scheduled. Two of the biggest are happening this week: ENA on October 5 and HYPE on October 6.

I want to compare them, because the structures are completely different — and that difference matters more than the dollar amounts.

ENA is unlocking roughly 1.4 billion tokens, about 14.3% of circulating supply. This is a cliff unlock. Ethena consolidated investor unlocks that were originally spread across years into one event. A cliff means the entire amount hits at once. Supply shock is concentrated.

HYPE is unlocking about 3.75 million tokens, roughly 1.69% of circulating supply. This is a linear unlock — a smaller slice releasing on a schedule. The percentage is far lower, and the release is spread out.

But here’s where it gets more interesting.

Ethena’s buyback mechanism — the thing that would absorb sell pressure — is not active yet. The trigger is USDe supply reaching $7.5 billion. Right now USDe is around $5 billion. That’s a $2.5 billion gap. So there’s no programmatic bid in the market for ENA right now.

Hyperliquid already handled its unlock differently. The team sold the tokens OTC to an institutional buyer and disclosed it ahead of time. No tokens hit the open market. Short-term pressure was isolated.

Two unlocks. Two structures. Two very different paths for supply.

The lesson isn’t “one is better.” The lesson is that “unlock” is a category, not a signal. A 14% cliff with no buyback support is a different event from a 1.7% linear release sold OTC. Treating them the same is how you misread the market.

I’m watching ENA exchange net inflows after today. If tokens move to exchange wallets, sellers are preparing. For HYPE, I’m watching the OTC buyer’s on-chain activity after October 7.

SOSO's dollar amount is five times larger. But SOSO's unlock is 5.63% of its circulating supply. NIL's is 3.57%.

Neither is a cliff. Both are relatively small ratios. But the comparison still matters.

Most people screen unlocks by dollar value. That's the wrong filter. A $50M unlock on a billion-dollar project is 5% dilution. A $5M unlock on a $40M project is 12.5%. The smaller dollar amount is the bigger event.

SOSO and NIL are both mid-range. But the framework is the same: ratio first, dollars second.

ZORA unlocks today. One source says $41.94M. Another says $1.12M.

Both are right. They're measuring different things.

The $41.94M figure is the notional value of 1.67 billion tokens at a reference price. The $1.12M figure is the actual market value at current prices. The supply itself is ~10% of circulating.

This is the unlock data problem. Notional value and market value can differ by 30x. If you only read the headline number, you're measuring the wrong thing.

The ratio is 10%. That doesn't change.

SCR unlocks 93.61 million tokens today. Worth roughly $1.96 million.

Sounds tiny. But that's 9.36% of its entire market cap hitting at once.

Now compare that to a $50 million unlock on a billion-dollar project. The dollar amount is 25x larger, but the supply shock is a fraction of the size.

The ratio is what matters. A 9% dilution on a micro-cap changes the float structure overnight. A 1% unlock on a large cap is background noise.

Small caps with high ratios are where unlocks actually hurt.

At first glance, AKE looks like the bigger risk. It's 44 times larger.

But LAZIO's unlock equals 25.80% of its market cap. AKE's is only 9.25%. A 25% supply shock on a $5.5M project dilutes holders far harder than a 9% release on a $684M one.

The dollar amount is the headline. The ratio is the event.

ZRO's dollar amount is nine times larger. KAITO's supply shock is proportionally bigger.

But the number that matters more: $337.6 million in total unlocks this week across 20 altcoins. October 21 alone carries $94.9 million.

Here's the pattern. Unlocks cluster. When multiple projects release supply in the same window, the market has to absorb all of it at once. A single unlock is a data point. A cluster is a liquidity event.

ARB unlocked $18 million worth. That's only 1.38%.

DBR's dollar amount was smaller. Its supply shock was seven times larger.

Most people compare unlocks by dollar value. The ratio is what actually matters. A $12 million unlock on a small cap can dilute holders far more than a $50 million unlock on a large one.
