Zcash Developers Target January 2027 for Quantum-Resistant Payments After ‘Bunker Mode’ Scare

Zcash (ZEC) developers are preparing a major security improvement aimed at protecting cryptocurrency payments against potential future quantum-computing threats, with January 2027 set as the target for introducing post-quantum signature support.

According to reports, the planned upgrade will initially focus on transparent transactions, which account for approximately 70% of issued ZEC. However, the team has not yet confirmed an official network activation date.

🔐 What Is Changing?

The proposed upgrade would introduce hash-based digital signatures designed to help protect transactions against attacks from future quantum computers. These signatures could provide an alternative to traditional cryptographic methods used to authorize cryptocurrency transactions.

The development comes amid renewed discussions about crypto security following warnings about potential threats to existing wallet encryption systems. While quantum computing remains a long-term security concern, no practical quantum attack capable of breaking current cryptocurrency wallet keys has been demonstrated.

🛡️ Privacy Remains a Key Focus

Alongside the proposed security upgrade, developers are working on a private wallet lookup tool designed to improve address privacy.

The tool would allow wallets to check balances without revealing to a server which addresses belong to the same user. An experimental version is already available through the “Private queries” setting in the Vizor wallet.

However, transparent Zcash transactions will remain publicly visible on the blockchain. Shielded transactions will also require separate safeguards to address potential quantum-related risks.

📌 What Does This Mean for ZEC?

The planned development highlights the growing importance of long-term security and privacy across the cryptocurrency industry. If successfully implemented, quantum-resistant signature support could strengthen protections for Zcash users as cryptographic technology continues to evolve.

For now, January 2027 remains a development target rather than a confirmed network-wide activation date. Investors and users should follow official developer updates for further details.

What do you think? Could quantum-resistant security become a major priority for the entire crypto industry in the coming years?
