What Is PCE?

Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index is a measure of the average change in prices that people in the U.S. pay for goods and services, and it is the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge.

The index is published monthly by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. It tracks a broad basket of spending, and it updates the weight of each item more often than some other measures, so it can capture how people shift their habits when prices change.

How It Differs From CPI

PCE is often compared with the Consumer Price Index (CPI). CPI measures the out-of-pocket prices that urban consumers pay and is the more widely reported release. PCE is broader, adjusts its spending weights more frequently, and reflects substitutions when shoppers change what they buy.

Over long periods, PCE has often run a little below CPI, though that gap can narrow or reverse for some time. Many analysts pay closest attention to core PCE, which strips out food and energy prices to show the underlying trend.

Why It Matters for Crypto

Because the Federal Reserve targets PCE, the reading can shape expectations for monetary policy. A hotter-than-expected print can suggest that interest rates may stay higher for longer, which can weigh on risk assets. A cooler print can raise the odds of easier conditions, which can support them.

In June 2026, headline PCE rose 3.7% from a year earlier and core PCE rose 3.3%, both still above the Fed’s 2% target. Readings like these can influence how traders view the path of rates, and by extension the mood in markets for bitcoin and ether. The effect is a possibility rather than a rule, since crypto is also driven by its own flows and other factors.
