Bitcoin's "Safest" Storage Just Got Robbed — $116M Vanishes From Cold Wallets💥🔥
Crypto's self-custody promise took a serious hit this week. A firmware flaw in Coldcard hardware wallets, made by Canadian manufacturer Coinkite, has let hackers drain approximately 1,816 Bitcoin, worth nearly $116 million, from more than 5,200 addresses across four attack waves since July 30, 2026.
The bug traces back to a March 2021 firmware update that mistakenly routed wallet seed generation through a software-based random number generator instead of the device's hardware RNG. That weaker randomness let attackers mathematically reconstruct private keys offline — without ever physically touching the device.
Coinkite has released patched firmware and urged affected users to migrate funds to new seeds immediately, unless they'd added extra entropy or a strong passphrase. Crucially, researchers stress Bitcoin's own protocol wasn't compromised — this was a device-level failure, not a blockchain flaw.
The attacker's identity remains unknown. The incident is reviving debate over whether everyday holders should self-custody at all, or lean on regulated custodians and ETFs instead.
