Why USDT Alone Can't Pay Gas on TON: GRAM Reserves and STON.fi Swaps Explained
Imagine a wallet holding 200 USDT. The owner opens a swap screen, picks the amount, and taps confirm. Instead of a quote, they get a warning that the wallet doesn't have enough of something else. It feels wrong. The balance is there, so why won't the transaction go through? The answer is that two different things are involved in every swap: the asset you want to move, and the asset the network accepts as payment for processing the move. This article explains how those two fit together on TON, and how STON.fi handles the second one. A quick note on names Until mid-2026, TON's native currency was called Toncoin, with the ticker TON. After a community vote, it was renamed Gram (GRAM). TON's documentation describes this as the official native currency today. The blockchain itself is still called TON, and the asset is the same one, with the same balances and addresses. Older guides, wallets and some pages still say "Toncoin" or "TON" for what is now GRAM. Nothing needs to be migrated or exchanged. Anyone offering to "convert your Toncoin to GRAM" is not describing a real step. What gas actually is When you use a blockchain, the network's validators do real work: running smart-contract code, passing messages between contracts, and storing the results. That work has a cost, and gas is the unit used to measure the computing part of it. A courier analogy helps. If you send a package worth $200, the courier still charges a delivery fee. The fee isn't deducted from the package's value, and it doesn't depend on how valuable the contents are. It pays for the handling. Gas works the same way: the value being moved and the cost of moving it are separate things. This isn't identical on every chain. Some networks use one fee market for everything, while others split costs differently. So the specifics below are about TON. How TON charges for transactions TON's documentation breaks a transaction's cost into several parts that line up with the stages of processing: Compute fees pay for code execution, measured in gas units. Forward and action fees pay for sending messages onward. Storage fees pay for keeping contract data on-chain. Import fees apply to inbound external messages. The total is the sum of these. The documentation also explains that validators set the prices through network configuration, and users can't override them. All of these costs are denominated in the native currency, which is now GRAM. For an internal message, the GRAM attached to the message sets how much gas the receiving contract can use. So the native currency is what actually pays for the work. Why USDT can't pay its own way On TON, USDT is a jetton, which is TON's standard for fungible tokens (similar in purpose to ERC-20 tokens elsewhere). Jettons aren't stored in a single ledger. The jetton contract tracks supply and metadata, and each holder has their own small jetton-wallet contract that tracks their balance and handles transfers. Moving a jetton therefore means sending messages between contracts, and each contract that runs needs gas. The jetton itself has no way to pay that bill, since the network prices computation in GRAM. That's why a wallet full of USDT can still be stuck. Here's a hypothetical. Alice holds enough USDT for a swap, but her wallet's GRAM balance is too low to cover the transaction costs. Depending on the app, the swap may be blocked before she signs, or it may fail after submission. Either way, the fix is to add a small amount of GRAM, not more USDT. Requirements differ between operations and routes, so don't assume every swap needs the same buffer. Reserved gas vs. spent gas Now to a practical example. A swap on a decentralized exchange isn't a single step. Your wallet's message passes through a jetton wallet, a router and a liquidity pool, and the result is sent back to you. Nobody can know the exact cost in advance, because it depends on the route and pool. STON.fi's Help Center explains its approach. The interface reserves slightly more GRAM than the final fee is expected to be, so the transaction doesn't fail midway for lack of gas. After execution, the unused portion is sent back automatically. Their own analogy is a card hold at a gas station: a larger hold first, then a final charge for what you actually used. The Help Center also says reserved GRAM is returned if a transaction fails. The main lesson is that the reserve is a ceiling, not a bill. If you see a larger amount requested than you expected, that doesn't mean that's what the swap will cost. Three other points keep this clear: A reserve isn't the only cost. A swap can also carry a pool trading fee, which is set per pool and is separate from network gas. Slippage and price impact are different again. They describe how the price moves, not what the network charges. Complex routes change the picture. More messages and more contracts can mean a different required buffer. Numbers drift. STON.fi's Help Center currently lists a reservation cap and a typical spent range for swaps, but these have changed over time. For current values, check the Help Center and the confirmation screen rather than any article, including this one. A practical example: sending USDT from TON to Base STON.fi's guide to sending USDT from TON to Base walks through a cross-chain route. According to the guide, you connect a TON wallet and a Base-compatible wallet, choose the token and destination network, enter the amount, review the swap details and fees, confirm in your wallet, and wait for execution. It notes that fees may include TON network fees plus cross-chain execution fees, and that the confirmation screen shows the amount you'd receive on Base including fees. Cross-chain adds preparation that a simple swap doesn't. You're working with two networks and two wallets, and the guide itself warns that cross-chain transactions can't be reversed. It also suggests a small test transaction before sending a large amount. With the concepts above, the guide becomes easier to read: Your USDT is the asset being moved. The network fee line is where the cost of processing on TON shows up. The final quote is what you should trust, not a rough guess made beforehand. One caution: the guide doesn't spell out how reserves or refunds work for cross-chain routes specifically. Don't assume the swap behavior described above carries over. Check what the interface shows for your route. Pre-swap checklist Confirm your wallet is connected to the right network.Check that your USDT (or other jetton) balance covers the amount you intend to swap.Check which asset the interface needs for network costs. On TON, expect that to be GRAM.Read the displayed reserve and fee details, and don't treat the reserve as the final fee.Look up the current fee information in STON.fi's Help Center if anything is unclearConfirm the destination network, asset and address before signing.Never share your seed phrase or private key with anyone offering help. FAQ Why can I have USDT but still be unable to swap? Because the network's processing costs are paid in its native currency (GRAM), not in the token you're swapping. If your GRAM balance is too low, the operation can be blocked or fail. Is the gas reserve the same as the final transaction fee? No. STON.fi describes the reserve as a cap set above the expected cost. The actual network fee is what's consumed, and STON.fi's Help Center says the unused portion is returned for swaps. Can transaction costs change? Yes. TON's fee levels are set through network configuration, and STON.fi's reserve and route behavior can also change. Treat any specific figure as a snapshot. Why might a cross-chain operation require more preparation than a simple transfer? It involves two networks, usually two wallets, extra execution steps, and a transaction that can't be reversed once confirmed. A single mistake in the address or network can be costly. Where should I check current fee and reserve requirements? In the live STON.fi swap interface, on its confirmation screen, and in STON.fi's Help Center. TON's own documentation covers how fees are structured. The takeaway The thing you want to swap and the thing that pays for the swap are separate. Keep a small GRAM buffer next to your USDT, read the reserve as a ceiling rather than a price, and check the confirmation screen before you sign. That habit prevents most of the avoidable failures on TON. What Are TON and GRAM, and How Are They Different? (Clear Explanation)
A lot of people still get confused between TON and GRAM. Some think they are the same thing. Others think GRAM is just another token. This confusion can lead to mistakes when moving money or using apps on the network. Let’s break it down in the simplest and most accurate way possible. What is TON? TON stands for The Open Network. It is a blockchain — a complete digital system. Think of it as a city. The city has roads, rules, electricity, buildings, and traffic systems. Everything happens inside this city. TON is the network itself. When people say “I’m using TON,” they mean they are interacting with this blockchain: sending value, using applications, or recording information on it. What is GRAM? GRAM is the native currency of the TON network. It is the special money that the network itself understands and uses. Every action on TON costs a small amount of GRAM. These costs are called network fees (or gas). You need GRAM to: Pay for transactions Interact with smart contracts Use most applications on the network Even if you hold other tokens, you still need a little GRAM in your wallet. Without it, most actions will fail. Important Difference: Tokens vs Native Currency This is where many people get mixed up. On TON, there are many tokens. These tokens are called jettons. Examples include USDT on TON, or any other project token created on the network. These jettons are not the same as GRAM. GRAM is the native currency built into the network. Jettons are tokens created on top of the network by projects or users. Think of it like this: TON is the city GRAM is the official money used inside the city Jettons are different shops, products, or private currencies that exist inside the city The Simple Rule You Should Remember Here is the cleanest way to keep it in your head: TON = the network GRAM = the native currency Jettons / stablecoins = tokens that live on TON If you remember only this rule, you will avoid most of the common mistakes. Practical Example: Entering TON from Another Network Let’s see how this works in real life. Imagine you have USDT on the TRON network (USDT TRC20). You want to bring it to TON so you can use it in TON applications. You cannot just send TRC20 USDT directly to a TON wallet. The two networks are separate. You need a cross-chain route. One supported way is to use STON.fi. Through a cross-chain swap, you can convert USDT TRC20 into USDT on TON. Once the USDT arrives on TON, you are now inside the TON network. From that point, you can stay in the same interface and continue swapping using the aggregated liquidity available on TON. But for every action you take after that, you will need a small amount of GRAM to pay the network fees. This example shows the difference clearly: You entered the TON network You received a token (USDT on TON) You need GRAM to keep using the network Why This Difference Matters Understanding the difference protects you from common errors: Sending tokens to the wrong network Thinking you can pay fees with USDT instead of GRAM Getting confused when a wallet shows both GRAM and other tokens Falling for scams that claim you need to “migrate” or “swap” TON into GRAM (the rename already happened, no action is needed) Final Summary Concept What it really is Simple comparison TON The blockchain network The city GRAM Native currency of the network Official money of the city Jettons (e.g. #USDT) Tokens created on the TON network Shops and products inside the city Once this becomes clear, using the TON ecosystem becomes much safer and easier. TON is the network. GRAM is the native currency. Everything else is a token living on that network. Keep this rule and you will understand the foundation of the entire TON ecosystem.
Many people believe that moving assets across multiple blockchains automatically leads to higher rewards. The idea sounds logical more chains should mean more opportunities. But when you look at real wallet data, the picture is more complicated. Frequent bridge users often look active and sophisticated. In reality, repeated bridge fees, gas costs, slippage, and occasional failed transactions can quietly reduce (or even erase) the extra yield they were chasing. There are clearer patterns: • High-frequency bridgers tend to pay more in costs than they realize • Selective users who move capital only when the numbers clearly make sense usually perform better • Users who stay on a single strong chain (like TON via STON.fi) often keep more of their returns because they avoid bridge complexity entirely • Newer atomic approaches (such as Omniston) allow cross-chain access without relying on traditional shared bridges The key lesson is simple: Being on more chains does not automatically mean better results. Being selective does. Before you bridge or swap across networks, always ask: What is the total real cost of this move? Is the yield difference big enough to justify it? Does a simpler single-chain option already exist? Sometimes the smartest DeFi decision is not moving at all. What’s your current approach single-chain focus or multi-chain rotation? Stablecoins, Cross-Chain, and Simple DeFi: Key Takeaways from STON.fi’s June HSC AMA
What the team discussed in the recent HSC AMA and how it reflects STON.fi’s vision for TON in 2026. On June 25, 2026, STON.fi hosted another insightful HSC AMA (likely focusing on stablecoins, cross-chain, and DeFi trends). Combined with their ongoing activity this month, several clear themes emerged that show where the protocol is headed. Here’s a practical breakdown for users and builders. 1. Stablecoins as the New Financial Rail The AMA likely touched on stablecoins as a foundational layer for DeFi. STON.fi has been expanding support for major stablecoins (USDT, USDC) across TON and EVM chains through Omniston. This makes sense: Stablecoins provide the stability users need for everyday DeFi activities swaps, farming, payments while TON’s speed and low fees make them practical. 2. Cross-Chain Execution is Live & Expanding Recent launches of TON <> EVM swaps (Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain, Polygon) were probably highlighted. Omniston is the engine making this possible with: RFQ for best rates Secure atomic settlement No traditional bridges for many flows This reduces friction and brings more liquidity into TON. 3. Simple DeFi & Telegram-Native Experiences Consistent messaging around “fewer steps” and Telegram integrations (Mini-Apps, launchpads like Gram Store) shows the focus on accessibility. Users want DeFi that feels like using any other Telegram feature not a complicated separate app. 4. Community & Builder Focus The team continues to engage the community (feature requests, AMAs) and support builders through SDK and Omniston docs. This open approach helps the ecosystem grow sustainably. Why This Matters in 2026 With TON’s Telegram user base and STON.fi’s infrastructure, the protocol is well-positioned to capture real adoption in DeFi, RWAs, and social finance. For users: Easier access to stablecoins, cross-chain flows, and yield opportunities. For builders: Powerful tools to build on top of reliable liquidity. ALWAYS WIN In crypto, winning isn't about catching every pump. It's s not about timing every market move. And it's definitely not about chasing every new trend.Real winning is finding a protocol that keeps building when others are busy making noise. That is the story of STON.fi. Since its launch, STON.fi has become more than just a decentralized exchange on TON. It has evolved into one of the foundational pillars of DeFi within The Open Network ecosystem. Every swap completed. Every liquidity pool created. Every builder empowered. Every user onboarded. These are not just numbers on a dashboard. They are pieces of a legacy being built block by block. While many protocols focus on short-term attention, STON.fi has focused on long-term value. The mission has remained clear: ✅ Make DeFi accessible. ✅ Keep trading fast and affordable. ✅ Empower users with true ownership of their assets. ✅ Create infrastructure that developers can build upon. ✅ Push the TON ecosystem forward. This commitment to innovation is why STON.fi continues to introduce solutions that strengthen the future of decentralized finance from advanced liquidity mechanisms and yield opportunities to Omniston, a liquidity aggregation layer designed to help users access the best execution across the TON ecosystem. But technology alone does not create a legacy. People do. The traders who trust the protocol. The liquidity providers who support the markets. The builders creating new applications. The ambassadors spreading awareness. And the community members who believe in a decentralized future. Together, they are writing the next chapter of DeFi on TON. That is why "Always Win" is more than a slogan. It is a mindset. A belief that when you support innovation, embrace decentralization, and contribute to a growing ecosystem, every step forward becomes a victory. Markets will rise. Markets will fall. Narratives will come and go. But strong infrastructure, strong communities, and strong builders stand the test of time. STON.fi continues to prove this every single day. As a proud STON.fi Ambassador, I am honored to witness and contribute to this journey. We're not simply participating in the future of DeFi. We're helping build it. And that's why, no matter the season, we continue to... ALWAYS WIN. $ #STONfi #TON #DeFi #Web3 #Crypto #BuildOnTON #Omniston #STONfiAmbassador
Omniston Powers xStocks Swaps in Gramstox Telegram Mini-App: Real-World Assets Meet TON’s Seamless E
Hey Binance Community, Bosher here from Nigeria In a world where traditional finance and crypto are finally converging, one of the most exciting developments on TON right now is the integration of Omniston (from STON.fi) into Gramstox enabling seamless swaps of xStocks (tokenized real-world stocks) directly inside a Telegram Mini-App. What Makes This Significant? xStocks are fully collateralized tokenized representations of major U.S. equities and ETFs (Apple, Tesla, Nvidia, SPY, and over 100 others). Backed by regulated providers and supported by heavyweights like Kraken, xStocks have already processed $25 Billion+ in total transaction volume across chains, with integrations on Solana, Ethereum, and now TON. Gramstox takes this further by combining: Spot and leveraged trading AI-powered market analysis Daily market recaps Public/private trading accounts Thanks to Omniston, users get best-rate execution, deep TON liquidity, and fast swaps all without leaving Telegram. This is huge for accessibility, especially in emerging markets where Telegram is the primary messaging app for hundreds of millions of users. Why This Matters Globally Telegram’s Reach: With over 1 billion users, TON + Telegram creates a distribution superpower that traditional brokers can’t match. Real Adoption: xStocks on TON are now accessible via TON Wallet and other wallets, bringing 24/7 on-chain trading of traditional assets to non-U.S. users who previously faced geographic barriers. Infrastructure Power: Omniston’s RFQ system (multiple resolvers competing for best prices) + cross-chain capabilities demonstrate how STON.fi is becoming the liquidity backbone for innovative TON projects. For builders and developers: The official STON.fi SDK and Omniston documentation make it straightforward to integrate similar swaps and liquidity into your own wallets, Mini-Apps, or DeFi products. Try Gramstox (Link in comments below) but remember this is an independent project. Important Disclaimer: Gramstox is an independent app using STON.fi infrastructure. The Real Power Move in DeFi Right Now: Why TON + Telegram Changes Everything
Hey fam, Bosher here from Nigeria I just watched the latest STON.fi panel “What’s Next for DeFi? The Power Moves That Actually Matter” and Andrey (CMO of STON.fi) dropped one of the clearest explanations I’ve heard. Key Quote from Andrey: “When we say TON, we mean Telegram quite often. When we say Telegram, we mean TON… In Ethereum, all these dApps exist in separate environments. But in Telegram/TON, it’s the whole ecosystem.” Why this matters: On Ethereum, users have to leave their familiar apps and go to a separate dApp. On TON + Telegram, everything happens inside the messaging app billions already use daily swaps, trading, Mini-Apps, all seamless. This leads to: Much lower user acquisition costs Higher conversion and retention rates Easier promotion and onboarding without users leaving Telegram STON.fi has leveraged this perfectly, becoming the leading DEX on TON with deep liquidity and real user adoption. This is one of the biggest “power moves” for DeFi in 2026: Distribution + Seamless UX. Crosschain Without Layovers: Why It Still Feels Broken
Hey fam, Bosher here from Nigeria I just watched the latest STON.fi live session and it hit hard cross-chain DeFi is supposed to be seamless, but in reality it still feels broken for most users. You have assets on one chain but want to swap, provide liquidity, or earn yield on another? You face confusing bridges, high unexpected gas fees, long waiting times, failed transactions, and security worries. It’s like booking a direct flight but ending up with multiple painful layovers. The good news? #Stonfi Omniston is actively solving this. Through the new execution layer, RFQ system, competing resolvers, and gasless UX experiments (especially on EVM chains), they’re making cross-chain flows much smoother no more unnecessary steps. Key takeaway from the session: Users don’t just want to “bridge” assets. They want to do things (swap, farm, rebalance) across chains easily. This is why I’m bullish on what the STON.fi team is building. Key Takeaways from STON.fi’s Emerging TON Builders Live Session
Hey fam, Bosher here from Kano, Nigeria 🇳🇬 I just joined the Emerging TON Builders session hosted by STON.fi and it was super insightful! The team brought together real builders (@Dyadnum, @StunTrade, @Toncast_TCAST) who are actively shipping products on top of STON.fi infrastructure not just ideas, but actual products in production. Main Highlights: How these projects successfully integrated STON.fi (swaps, liquidity, Omniston routing) What worked well in real production vs what needed fixing Real user behavior and feedback they received Valuable lessons on building sustainable products beyond hackathons and grants It was inspiring to see teams that kept pushing after demo day. This is exactly how the TON ecosystem grows stronger. Huge thanks to the STON.fi team for organizing this and giving the community direct access to real builders. If you missed it, I highly recommend watching the replay. Who else joined the session? What was your biggest takeaway? #STONchronicles: Omniston Just Made Cross-Chain DeFi Much Smoother with Gasless UX
Hey fam, Bosher here from Kano, Nigeria 🇳🇬 One of the biggest frustrations in DeFi is still the gas problem — you have the tokens, but you can’t do anything because you’re missing native gas on that chain. The Omniston team is solving this step by step. With the new cross-chain execution model, Omniston is introducing gasless UX through their Order Settlement system. This is a big leap from being just a swap aggregator toward becoming a full cross-chain execution layer. How Gasless Orders Work: 1️⃣ You simply sign a message in your wallet (no gas needed from you) 2️⃣ A resolver submits the transaction and pays the gas for you 3️⃣ Smart contracts verify your signature and execute the order Current Status: ✅ Gasless flow is now live in the sandbox for EVM source chains 🔄 For TON as source chain, gas is still required (for now) This improvement makes cross-chain flows significantly more user-friendly while making the underlying execution layer much more powerful. If you’re a developer or power user, this is worth testing. Full Breakdown: → Read the detailed article in comments 👇 blog.ston.fi/omnistons-new-… What do you think? Is gasless cross-chain swapping a game changer for you, or do you still prefer traditional methods? Drop your thoughts below 👇 #STONfi #Omniston #DeFi #CrossChain #TON #Gasless
