Is the most predictable Fed decision of the year also the most misleading one?
At 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday (2:00 AM Beijing time today), the Federal Reserve left rates unchanged at 3.75% to 4.00%, exactly as about 95% of traders expected (Polymarket). The vote was 10-2, with Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack dissenting in favor of a hike.
$BTC climbed to about $81,244 after the announcement, up just 0.66% in 24 hours (Binance spot). That muted reaction is the story. A fully priced-in decision rarely moves markets, and this one did not.
📊 Why it matters
The statement kept the hawkish line intact: activity is expanding at a strong pace, and inflation remains elevated. The 10-year Treasury yield actually rose 4 basis points to 5.025% after the decision (CoinDesk), which is the opposite of what risk assets want to see.
My take: the trade was never about October. It is about December. Markets now price roughly 73% to 79% odds of a hike at the December 9 meeting (CME FedWatch, Kalshi, Polymarket). A hold today does not guarantee a hold in December, and that gap is where the next move gets priced.
🟢 Bullish scenario: BTC holds above $81,000, then tests $83,900 to $84,000.
🔴 Bearish scenario: lose $79,400 to $79,600 support, and $75,000 comes back into view.
🎯 What to watch:
- December hike odds moving off the 73-79% range
- Incoming inflation and jobs data before December 9
- Spot ETF flows, which just printed $176M of inflows yesterday (BitcoinMagazine)
One day of calm does not erase the trend, and a priced-in hold is not the same as an easy market. Is December a hike that crypto has to survive, or a bluff the market is calling? 🐂🐻
Not financial advice. DYOR.
