🚨 XRP Ledger Fixes Critical Token-Creation Vulnerability

The XRP Ledger recently disclosed a major security flaw that, in theory, could have allowed an attacker to create spendable XRP without actually paying for it. The issue was linked to an integer-overflow error in the payment engine triggered through a large number of specially crafted offers.

Why is this important? XRP’s 100 billion supply cap is a key part of its economic model. If extra XRP could be created and circulated it could undermine confidence in the network’s supply integrity.

The positive news is that the vulnerability was handled responsibly. A security researcher reported it through the bug bounty program on September 22, 2026. Developers reproduced the issue in testing, released the fix in xrpld 3.4.1 on September 25, and disclosed the technical details only after the patch was available. As of October 9, there was no evidence of exploitation on public XRPL networks.

For regular XRP holders there is no indication that funds were affected or that emergency transfers are needed. Node operators should ensure they are running version 3.4.1 or later.

This incident is a reminder that even long-running blockchains can contain hidden risks but responsible disclosure, fast patching, and transparent communication are vital signs of a mature security process. dyor
