Bitcoin cleared $86,000 twice in one day. Nobody agrees why.

October 6 was a busy Tuesday for $BTC . Price briefly pushed above $86,000 two separate times, and the news flow was thick. The CFTC floated a proposal on crypto market regulation. The SEC followed with a custody proposal for investment advisers. And spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $118.8M net.
Look closer at that ETF number. BlackRock's IBIT took in $122M on its own, which is more than the day's total, because Grayscale's Mini fund lost $11M. Morgan Stanley's fund added $7.8M, and most other funds recorded nothing at all. That is one issuer carrying the day, not broad demand.
Then there was the calendar. The Fed's meeting minutes were due the next day. So the market was reacting to news and waiting for news in the same session, which makes it hard to say what actually moved price.
I'd also be careful about reading one ETF print as a trend. Trackers disagree on the bigger picture. CoinDesk-based data shows year-to-date inflows above $1.25B, while other reports call the first half of 2026 the worst on record for outflows, at $5.4B. I can't reconcile those from here.
The backdrop matters too. By October 8 the 10-year US yield sat near 5.32%, close to a multi-decade high, and Brent crude had climbed above $105. When a government bond pays that much, every crypto headline has to compete with it.
That's why I'm watching ETH next to $BTC . If the move came from Bitcoin-specific news like ETF demand, $BTC should lead. If it was a broad reaction to rates and risk appetite, $ETH should track it closely. How they separate says more than either price alone. That is my reasoning, not a confirmed signal.
So which one carried the most weight: regulation, ETF demand, or traders positioning for the Fed?
