#EtherTook60%OfCryptoLiquidations Yeah, brutal day for ETH longs — today, October 15th.
ETH took ∼60% of the BTC + ETH liquidation flush:
Nearly $1 billion in crypto futures liquidated in the last 24h as crypto sold off on Fed rate uncertainty.
Of just BTC + ETH, ∼$483M got wiped: $286M in Ether vs $197M in Bitcoin. That's about 59% ETH.
Other data checks put it at Ether at about $286M compared with $197M for bitcoin during Asian morning hours.
ETH fell ∼ 6.4% to ∼$2,356 while BTC fell ∼ 3.2% to ∼$81k — so ETH fell roughly twice as much as BTC.
Why ETH got hit harder:
More leverage, smaller base: Outstanding ETH futures were only ∼$30B vs $52B for BTC, but liquidations were higher in absolute terms. Traders were running heavier long leverage on ETH.
Macro trigger: Hotter-than-expected US September CPI + uncertainty about Fed's next rate decision — risk assets dumped, and cascading liquidations made it worse. Liquidations happen when borrowed positions don't have enough collateral and exchanges auto-close them.
Alt spillover: SOL saw ∼$31M, Zcash ∼$19M in liquidations as the move spread.
In short: same sell-off, but ETH longs were more crowded and more levered, so ETH absorbed about 60% of the forced closures between the two biggest cryptos, despite having a futures market ∼ 40% smaller than Bitcoin's.
