Last week a friend asked me where her medical records actually live. I started to answer, then realized I had no idea. Somewhere on a server, owned by someone, copied who knows how many times.
That small moment sent me down a rabbit hole, and Nillion was one stop along the way. The part that caught my attention is the simple promise behind it: your information can be put to work without being handed over in readable form. Pieces get spread across many machines, so no single one holds the full story.
What makes it feel grounded is that the problem isn't imaginary. Clinics, insurers, banks, and public offices all face real rules about protecting personal details. A tool designed to fit inside those expectations has somewhere practical to go, which is rarely true of crypto projects.
Still, I'd be fooling myself if I stopped there. Good design doesn't automatically mean good practice. Who audits the nodes? If something leaks, who answers for it? And regulators don't always read "nobody can see this" as comforting.
