What Is Linux?

Linux is a popular, highly customizable operating system (OS) built around an open-source software model. It manages communication between software and hardware, powering a wide range of devices used around the world. Because it is open-source, Linux is freely available for both commercial and non-commercial use, and anyone can study, modify, and distribute its source code under the terms of its licenses.
Linux was created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Thanks to its flexibility, it can be found in desktop computers, laptops, web servers, supercomputers, smartphones, televisions, routers, digital cameras, and even vehicles.

Technically, Linux is a kernel: the core program of an operating system that translates software instructions into binary data the hardware can process. The kernel on its own does not resemble the computer experience most people are familiar with. To make it more practical, developers add extra components and applications, then package everything together. These complete, ready-to-use versions are known as distributions, or "distros" for short.

Over time, communities and companies have shaped Linux into systems that match their specific preferences and needs. As a result, there is a long list of distros from around the globe. Some are entirely community-driven, such as Debian or Arch Linux, while others have corporate backing, like Fedora or openSUSE.

Different distributions tend to prioritize different goals. For example, some focus on security and data protection, others on ease of use for newcomers, such as Ubuntu, and others on deep customization, such as Arch. This variety allows users to select a system that fits their technical skill level and intended use.

Linux is widely regarded as a versatile, efficient, and secure system. Its relatively lightweight design can improve performance and may even help extend the life of older hardware. Because the source code is open, a global community can review and improve it, which many developers consider a meaningful advantage for transparency and reliability.

These qualities help explain why Linux is common in the cryptocurrency space. Many blockchain nodes and validators run on Linux servers, and client software such as Bitcoin Core is frequently operated in Linux environments. Its stability for long-running processes and its suitability for servers make it a practical choice for participants who want to help maintain a network or run their own infrastructure.
