This result was slightly sharper than both the estimated drop of 1.7% and the prior month's decline of 1.7%. Meanwhile, the median home price saw a year-over-year increase of 1.6%, climbing to $429,100.

The latest employment numbers have been released, offering a helpful update on the labor market. First time unemployment filings decreased to 206k. This marks a reduction from the prior count of 207k, even though the figure landed slightly above the estimated 205k.
Regarding ongoing support, continuing claims settled at 1.774M. This result is better than anticipated, coming in below the projected 1.780M while also improving upon the prior total of 1.775.
Looking at the state level data, the most significant upward shifts were recorded in California and Michigan, which both experienced an increase of 2.2k. They were closely followed by Washington, which saw a rise of 0.9k. On the other hand, the largest declines took place in New York with a drop of 3.6k, Arkansas with a decrease of 0.4k, and Maryland, which went down by 0.3k.
The August PPI report provides helpful insights into recent #inflation trends. On a month-over-month basis, the headline index grew by 0.4%, which perfectly matched the 0.4% estimate. Furthermore, the figure for the preceding period was adjusted higher to 0.1%, an upward revision from the initially reported 0.0%. When examining the core numbers, month-over-month growth stood at 0.2%. This result came in just shy of the anticipated 0.3% estimate. Similar to the headline data, the previous core reading also experienced a positive adjustment, revising upward to 0.3% from the original 0.2%.
The latest economic data for August gives us a fresh look at the PPI. Overall #inflation rose by +5.4% year-over-year, which slightly exceeded the estimated +5.3% and came in higher than the previous reading of +4.8%. When looking at the core numbers, we saw a year-over-year increase of +4.6%. This core figure landed exactly on the +4.6% estimate, showing a steady climb from the prior +4.2%.
Extreme weather and supply chain interruptions connected to war have recently fueled price increases across all commodity groups. Because of these driving factors, global food prices experienced a notable jump in August. The FAO (Food & Agriculture Organization) Price Index, which actively monitors these metrics, notes that this recent surge pushed worldwide costs to their highest point since Nov 2022. Despite this upward trend, it is encouraging to see that the current rates still remain below the historic peak established in Mar 2022.
A closer look at the 136,000 new consumer bankruptcies recorded in 2Q26 highlights how different age brackets are experiencing financial challenges. People between the ages of 40 and 49 made up more than a quarter of the total, sitting at 26.8%. The 50 to 59 demographic followed as the next largest segment, accounting for 23.1% of the recent filings.
Recent data from .@MBAmortgage reveals some significant shifts in the mortgage market. For the week ended Sept. 4, the 30-year fixed rate climbed to 6.85%, making it the highest we have seen since June 2025. This rate also represents an increase of 36bps compared to exactly one year earlier. Meanwhile, the MBA refinance index, a metric that measures loan apps, experienced a decline of 6.2%. As a result of this drop, the index currently sits at its lowest level since May 2025.

The perceived likelihood of facing higher unemployment within the next 1y has climbed to its highest point since the pandemic began. Furthermore, should workers happen to lose their current positions, their overall confidence in successfully securing new employment continues to sit below pandemic-era levels.
