🇫🇷 France National Assembly Passes Crypto-to-Stablecoin Tax Amendment ⚖️

Imagine selling a cryptocurrency, moving your gains into a stablecoin to protect their value, and discovering that this simple move could now trigger a tax bill. For French crypto investors, that possibility has moved closer to reality.

On October 16, France’s National Assembly adopted an amendment by a narrow 38–37 vote to remove the tax deferral available when converting crypto assets into stablecoins.

Under the existing framework described during the debate, converting crypto directly into euros or dollars can trigger taxation, while switching into stablecoins can defer that moment. The amendment targets this difference.

The real issue is not stablecoin adoption. It is when a taxable event occurs.

Stablecoins help traders preserve liquidity, manage volatility, and remain inside the crypto ecosystem without immediately returning to traditional currency. If conversions become taxable, some investors may reconsider how frequently they rebalance their portfolios.

However, this does not automatically mean stablecoin trading will collapse. The actual impact depends on the final legislation, implementation details, and how investors adapt their strategies.

There is also a legitimate policy argument: governments want consistent tax treatment and fewer opportunities to defer or avoid taxation. Investors, meanwhile, need predictable rules that do not create unnecessary friction.

My take: Tax clarity can strengthen a market, but taxing routine portfolio movements can also discourage participation. The balance between fair taxation and practical crypto usage will matter more than the headline itself.

France’s decision is a reminder that protecting capital is not just about choosing the right asset; understanding the tax rules can be equally important.
