Yesterday, the EU Parliament passed a law that lets platforms scan your private messages without a warrant.
314 MEPs voted against it. Only 276 voted for it. It passed anyway.
Here's what that means for your privacy and what you can do about it.

Chat Control 1.0 is now law in the EU until April 2028.
It allows platforms to voluntarily scan private messages and emails without judicial authorization, without suspicion, without your knowledge.
Platforms affected: Instagram DMs, Discord, Snapchat, Gmail, Skype, Xbox messaging.

The procedural mechanics matter here.
The vote required an absolute majority of 361 out of 720 MEPs to block it. Only 607 showed up right before summer recess. 314 voted against. That was a majority of those present but 47 votes short of the threshold needed.
A majority opposed it. It passed anyway.

What changes now:
US tech companies can once again scan private, unencrypted messages on their platforms no warrant required.
End-to-end encrypted services (WhatsApp, Signal, iMessage) are currently exempt.
But Chat Control 2.0 the permanent version is already being negotiated. Client-side scanning is on the table. That would scan your messages on your device, before encryption is applied.
