Workday (WDAY) stock edged higher by 0.30% during Tuesday trading despite the company announcing another wave of workforce reductions. The enterprise cloud applications provider is eliminating approximately 500 positions, representing roughly 2.5% of its total employee base worldwide.

The layoffs were revealed through an 8-K filing submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The majority of impacted positions are concentrated in the company’s Product and Technology organization.

According to the filing, the decision aims to “better align team structures with Workday’s strategic growth priorities.” The company also noted it would reduce certain leased office facilities.

With approximately 21,000 employees on the payroll as of late January, the 2.5% reduction translates to around 525 individuals facing job elimination.

Financial Impact of Restructuring

The workforce reduction carries substantial financial implications. Workday anticipates incurring between $65M and $85M in restructuring-related charges.

The bulk of these expenses, ranging from $55M to $70M, will be recorded during the third quarter of fiscal year 2027. An additional $10M is slated for recognition in the fourth quarter.

Employee-related costs, including severance packages and benefits, account for $40M to $55M of the total expense. Stock-based compensation charges contribute roughly $10M more.

The remaining $15M stems from impairment charges related to office space the company plans to vacate. All these costs represent either non-cash items or one-time expenses directly connected to the restructuring initiative.

The financial burden will also impact profitability metrics. Workday projects its GAAP operating margin will trail its non-GAAP counterpart by approximately 21 percentage points during Q3.

Over the complete fiscal year, this differential is expected to tighten to roughly 19 percentage points. The company’s November 27 third-quarter earnings release will provide comprehensive details.

Repeated Workforce Reductions

This marks Workday’s second round of job eliminations in 2026. The company previously reduced headcount by approximately 2% in February, with those cuts primarily affecting the Global Customer Operations division.

That initial reduction was followed by unexpected leadership changes. Approximately one week after the February announcement, then-CEO Carl Eschenbach departed from his role.

Company cofounder Aneel Bhusri assumed the CEO position, marking his fourth stint leading the organization. Bhusri has maintained an optimistic public stance regarding Workday’s competitive positioning.

Notably, neither workforce reduction this year explicitly referenced artificial intelligence as a contributing factor. This distinction carries significance amid widespread concerns about AI’s impact on software companies throughout 2026.

Market participants became increasingly anxious earlier this year about the possibility of enterprises leveraging AI to develop internal software solutions rather than purchasing commercial platforms. This concern, dubbed the “SaaSpocalypse,” erased hundreds of billions in market capitalization from software sector companies.

Bhusri directly addressed these worries during Workday’s August quarterly earnings discussion. He stated he had encountered zero customers considering replacing Workday with internally developed or startup alternatives, and this remained true in subsequent quarters.

Nevertheless, share price performance reveals a challenging period. Workday stock has retreated approximately 12% since the beginning of the year.

The company indicated it intends to continue recruiting for specific strategic positions and geographic markets throughout fiscal 2027. This selective hiring will occur concurrently with the workforce reductions disclosed this week.

Workday’s November 27 third-quarter financial results will serve as an important checkpoint. The report should clarify whether the restructuring expenses and profitability impacts materialize as management anticipates.
