Binance’s preliminary investigation indicates that the security incident may be linked to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed the attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. We have found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked. We will share a detailed technical post-mortem report once the investigation is complete and the information has been fully verified.
Total losses are estimated at approximately $6.3 billion. We have coordinated with blockchain partners to freeze the affected assets; so far, approximately $3 billion has been frozen on-chain.
Binance will cover all losses using the SAFU fund and company funds. User funds remain safe. We will also publish an updated Proof of Reserves once remediation measures are complete.
As an immediate precaution, Binance has:
temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while completing security checks;
revoked approvals for the affected address;
