In Short
Twitter is sharing ad revenue with select users who sign up for the "Ads Revenue Sharing" and "Creator Subscriptions" programs.
The program is initially available to users who meet certain criteria.
Users have reported receiving significant payouts, with one user receiving Rs 21 lakh.
By Abhik Sengupta: Twitter has started sharing ad revenue with select users. It means users are getting paid to tweet. Users or professional creators will have to sign up for "Ads Revenue Sharing" and "Creator Subscriptions" programmes to get paid. Twitter says Creator Ads Revenue Sharing will be available in all the countries where Stripe supports payouts. It means users in India cannot get paid to tweet yet, though the social media firm may consider revising the policy later. A tweet also suggests that popular YouTuber Mr Beast (James Donaldson) earned $25,000 (Rs 21 lakh) from Twitter as a part of the ad-sharing revenue. Many users have received over Rs 5 lakh as compensation.
In a blog post, Twitter explains the Ads Revenue Sharing programme is rolling out to an "initial group" who will be invited to accept payment. To sign up for the programme, users will need to be subscribed to Twitter Blue or Verified Organisations. They also need to have at least five million impressions posts in each of the last three months. Twitter says users or creators need to pass Twitter's Creator Monetization Standards, which include parameters like age, country, and activity on the platform.
In a blog post, Twitter states a portal or page for the application process for ad revenue sharing will be launched soon. Twitter owner Elon Musk first announced the programme back in February.
'Quitting my job'
Meanwhile, several creators have started posting about the money Twitter is sharing with them as a part of the Creator Ads Revenue Sharing programme. Titter Daily, a popular page on Twitter that tracks news related to the Musk-owned company, notes that a user (RaptalkSK) received $2,236 (Rs 1.8 lakh) from the company. RaptalkSK also posted about the revenue from Twitter in a tweet. He says, "Officially quit my job. Putting my all into making tweets, call me dumb I don't care. Gonna make my dreams a reality."
Another user, "levelsio" received $3,899 (Rs 3.1 lakh). He writes, "Apparently payout for five months tweeting so $3,899 for about 250,000,000 impressions or a CPM of $0.01."
Interestingly, Elon Musk is also eligible for the ad revenue sharing programme, as his profile is verified and fits all the other parameters. When a user asked how much he was going to make, Musk replied that he gave his share to "the creator payout pool."
The timing of the rollout is also interesting as Twitter is facing heat from Threads by Meta. With the latest programme, Twitter will retain its loyal creators and users. Meta does not offer any ad revenue sharing programme yet.
