Fed rate cut expectations have changed, rate hike may be needed
In March, the number of non-farm payrolls in the United States increased by 303,000, significantly exceeding the expected 200,000, and higher than the average monthly increase of 231,000 in the past 12 months, the largest increase since May 2023.
After the data was released, traders cut bets on the possibility of a Fed rate cut in June. The swap market will fully price in the date of the Fed's first rate cut to be postponed from July to September. Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said on Friday that it is too early to consider a rate cut. Fed Governor Bowman also expressed concerns about potential upside risks to inflation on Friday.
She reiterated that it is "not yet" the time to cut interest rates, and that interest rate hikes may be needed to control inflation. Although she said that "rate cuts will eventually become appropriate", "we are not at the time to cut interest rates yet" because "I still see some upside risks to inflation."
