The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is exploring offline solutions to boost adoption of its central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital rupee, in remote areas with limited internet access. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das announced plans to introduce offline functionality in CBDC-R during a Monetary Policy Committee review meeting. The central bank will evaluate various proximity and non-proximity-based solutions in different environments. The digital rupee currently enables person-to-person and person-to-merchant transactions using digital wallets provided by pilot banks. The RBI launched its retail CBDC pilot in December 2022, achieving one million daily transactions by December 2023.
