I've been going through Nillion's launch material since Dusk went live on Ethereum mainnet on Oct 6, and the simplest way I can put it is this: on public chains your order is readable before it fills, and Nillion is trying to end that.

How it works. You write an instruction and tie it to a condition. The payload is split into encrypted shares across a committee of nodes, each holding one share, so no single operator can rebuild it. Nodes release it only when a live data feed confirms the condition. No keeper decides.
Nillion's own example write an ETH trade in advance, seal it to BTC reaching $80k, and it stays hidden until then and fires on its own. The use cases they list are private stops, sealed bids, hidden rebalance logic and private agent strategies.

What changed for the network. Covenants now settle on Ethereum L1, so the old L2 is being wound down in the coming weeks. Nillion has told holders to move any NIL on the L2 to L1. Blacklight node operators need a fresh registration, ETH for gas and a minimum stake of 70,000 NIL. $NIL is used for protocol fees and for staking to run nodes.

What's next. Dusk is phase one of seven, running Aug to Nov 2026. Darkfall follows, taking the same functionality to Arbitrum, Base and Optimism through one shared node network. The last phase, Moonshine, aims at cent-priced Covenants.
What I'm watching: whether apps actually use Covenants now that they're live, and how smoothly the L2 shutdown goes. The roadmap lists the steps but not dates for each.
