Cryptocurrency volatility today: cautious stability and mounting economic pressures

Cryptocurrency markets are showing cautious stability today after a wave of sharp volatility that began yesterday evening, Thursday. Bitcoin, the market’s best-known cryptocurrency, is trading near $83,000 after falling to $80,350, triggering the liquidation of trading positions worth more than $1 billion over 24 hours.

Analysts believe this move is part of what is known as hedging against currency debasement, as investors seek alternative safe havens amid increasing government intervention in sovereign debt markets. Despite this stability, Bitcoin remains down about 30% from its all-time high, recorded in the fall of 2025.

Pressure on exchange-traded funds

On the institutional flows front, spot Bitcoin funds are facing significant pressure, recording weekly losses of $678 million. Data from the SoSoValue platform showed that October 9 saw a limited return of positive flows, totaling $21 million, led by BlackRock.

Ethereum funds are in an even more difficult position, recording five consecutive days of outflows totaling $542 million, all from BlackRock's fund. Meanwhile, Ripple funds remained relatively calm, with negligible flows for the third consecutive day this month.

Security investigation shakes confidence in cold wallets

The market was hit by a new security shock after cold-wallet manufacturer Ledger announced an investigation into reports of lost digital assets. Preliminary findings indicated that the affected devices were sold through a Southeast Asian distributor called Crypto Belis, and blockchain investigators estimated potential losses at between $86 million and $93 million.

The company asked the distributor to suspend sales and shipments immediately, and urged users who had purchased from this source to transfer their assets to new devices, stressing that there is currently no evidence that its internal systems were breached.

Macroeconomics takes the reins

The trajectory of cryptocurrencies is no longer tied solely to regulatory news; it has become fully subject to macroeconomic indicators. Rising oil prices and growing expectations of tighter U.S. monetary policy have dampened investors' appetite for risk.

Markets are awaiting the release of U.S. inflation data for the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index, which will play a decisive role in the Federal Reserve's decision scheduled for October 27 and 28. Expectations are that interest rates will remain unchanged, with the possibility of a 25-basis-point increase in December.
