The biggest DeFi theft case of this year has gone all the way to court.
Yesterday, KelpDAO issued a statement via its official X account: it has filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Canada, officially suing LayerZero and its CEO, seeking accountability for the $292 million stolen from rsETH’s cross-chain bridge in April this year.
At the heart of the dispute is the bridge’s “single-validator” configuration at the time. KelpDAO says the deployment of LayerZero was initially reviewed in writing. LayerZero, in turn, counters that KelpDAO privately downgraded multiple validators to a single point, which gave the hacker an opening.
The CEO’s response is firm: completely baseless—see you in the Vancouver court.
One interesting detail: after the theft, KelpDAO had already migrated the rsETH bridge to Chainlink CCIP, essentially changing vendors while the lawsuit is underway.
