FOMC September: One Rate Hike, or the Start of a New Fed Cycle?
Markets are entering September with a strange tension: the Fed has not moved yet, but expectations already have. After August CPI rose 0.4% monthly and 3.4% annually, with core CPI at 2.4%, investors are watching whether the decision changes policy or the entire rate path.
My key insight: the size of the move may matter less than the message behind it. A 25-basis-point hike framed as a one-off response to inflation could hurt risk appetite briefly. But guidance suggesting more tightening would force markets to reprice the future, not just the decision.
That distinction flows through Treasury yields, the dollar and liquidity. Higher yields and a firmer dollar can tighten financial conditions, making speculative assets less comfortable. That matters for BTC and technology stocks, while gold can face pressure when real yields and the dollar rise, even as geopolitical risk supports demand.
The opposite scenario matters too. If the Fed holds, or hikes but signals limited follow-through, markets could reverse an earlier hawkish move. That is why I would watch Powell’s language, projections, Treasury yields and whether the first market move survives the next few hours.
My view is cautiously neutral. A hike is increasingly discussed, but the real signal is whether policymakers are beginning a broader tightening cycle or simply responding to an inflation shock.
Markets may trade the headline for minutes, but they price the path for months. Which matters more this time: the Fed’s rate decision, or its message about what comes next?
