Hong Kong stocks fell for a second consecutive session on Tuesday, September 8, as technology shares came under pressure and rising geopolitical tensions pushed oil prices sharply higher.

The Hang Seng Index declined about 0.4% to 25,317, while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell around 1.6%, reflecting renewed weakness across major technology names.

Investor sentiment was also affected by escalating tensions in the Middle East after attacks on Saudi Arabian energy facilities disrupted some operations. The developments pushed crude prices toward $USDC 100 a barrel, raising concerns about higher energy costs and renewed inflationary pressure on global markets.

China Trade Data Offers Some Support

Mainland Chinese markets were more resilient. The Shanghai Composite gained around 0.2%, while China's August exports jumped 25% year over year, supported by demand for automobiles and high-tech products. China's trade surplus also widened to about $US 119.1 billion.

The contrast between mainland and Hong Kong markets highlights how geopolitical risks and technology-sector selling are currently weighing more heavily on Hong Kong-listed stocks.

Longsys Makes Hong Kong Debut

Chinese memory-chip company Longsys Electronics made its Hong Kong debut but closed at HK$USDC 233.60, down about 1%. The company raised approximately $903 million through its share sale, making the listing one of the notable new offerings in Hong Kong's recent IPO market.

Longsys reported a major increase in first-half profit, helped by strong AI-related demand and higher selling prices, although supply constraints and rising raw-material costs remain challenges.

What Investors Are Watching

Markets are now closely watching oil prices, Middle East developments, China's economic data and upcoming U.S.inflation figures. Higher oil prices could increase inflation expectations and put additional pressure on technology and other rate-sensitive stocks.

For Hong Kong equities, the key question is whether technology stocks can stabilize after the recent decline or whether continued geopolitical uncertainty will keep investors cautious
