The U.S.-Canada trade war gains another chapter, but Canadian oil has, for now, stayed out of the line of fire.
This doesn’t seem to be a coincidence. Canada sends about 90% of its crude oil exports to the U.S., while Americans rely heavily on Canadian oil to supply their refineries.
It’s a difficult relationship to break: pipelines, refineries, and energy supply chains between the two countries are deeply intertwined.
💡 My take: Washington may pressure Canada across multiple sectors, but going hard on oil could potentially trigger a spillover effect inside the U.S. itself—raising costs and pressuring the energy market.
For oil, therefore, the question isn’t just “will there be tariffs?”. The most important question is: how far can the U.S. squeeze Canada without harming its own American consumer?
