💥 QUANTUM COMPUTING: A REAL THREAT TO BITCOIN?
Quantum computing is advancing fast. And with it, the possibility that a quantum computer could break the cryptography that protects Bitcoin.
It sounds like science fiction, but Bitcoin developers are already working on solutions. The most important one is called BIP-360.
In this article I explain what quantum threat is, how BIP-360 works, and what you can do to protect your crypto.

📌 WHAT IS THE QUANTUM THREAT?
Bitcoin uses public-key cryptography (ECDSA) to protect transactions. A powerful enough quantum computer could solve the mathematical problems that protect those keys in seconds.
If that happens, someone could move your Bitcoins without your authorization.

Experts don’t agree. Adam Back (Blockstream) believes it won’t be a problem in the next 20 to 40 years. Other analysts, such as those at Bernstein, believe Bitcoin has between 3 and 5 years to prepare.
Most people agree that the risk is real, but not imminent. There’s time to act.

📌 WHAT IS BIP-360?
BIP-360 is an improvement proposal for Bitcoin (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal). Its goal is to update the system to be resistant to quantum attacks.
The idea is to change the current digital signature scheme (ECDSA) to a more secure one, such as SPHINCS+ or Dilithium, which are resistant to quantum computing.
This update would require consensus across the whole network and could be implemented as a soft fork.

📌 WHAT DOES BIP-360 MEAN FOR USERS?
If BIP-360 is implemented, users would have to migrate their funds to new addresses using the new signature scheme.
It won’t be automatic. Each user would have to initiate a transaction to move their Bitcoins to an address compatible with the new cryptography.
It will be a process similar to what happened when addresses changed from P2PKH to P2SH or to Bech32.

📌 WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY TO PROTECT YOURSELF
1. Keep your Bitcoins in addresses that have not reused public keys.
2. Follow the news about BIP-360 and advances in quantum computing.
3. If you have large amounts, consider using wallets that support quantum signatures once they’re available.
4. Don’t sell out of fear. The Bitcoin community is working on solutions.

Quantum computing is a real challenge, but it isn’t the end of Bitcoin. The community is prepared, and solutions are already on the way.
Don’t make rushed decisions. Stay informed and, when the time comes, follow the developers’ instructions to migrate your funds.
