Bitfinex thwarts $15 billion security breach attempt

According to Paolo Ardoino, the hacker used a “partial payment exploit” in the attack because he expected the exchange to have misconfigured its transaction processing software. The incident became the focus of attention in the crypto community when network security service Whale Alert reported on social network X that about 25.6 billion XRP, worth almost $15 billion, had been transferred from an unknown wallet to Bitfinex. The transfer amount should have amounted to almost half of the total amount of XRP in circulation. The post was later deleted.

Ardoino clarified that the failed exchange hack was based on a possible vulnerability in the partial payment function of the XRP registry “delivered_amount”. The attacker bet that the exchange's security systems were not configured properly and only read the "amount" field in XRP transactions, for which he specified a high value. In fact, the attacker sent a much smaller amount specified in another field of the transaction and tried to trick Bitfinex into crediting him the difference.
