Hackers stole 16.8 BTC and $180,000 worth of Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain through a fake Ledger Live app. The app, which posed as the legitimate Ledger Live app, was distributed via a phishing link that was sent to Ledger users. Once users downloaded the fake app, hackers were able to access their private keys and steal their funds.
The attack occurred on October 26, 2023 and affected an unknown number of users. Ledger has confirmed that the stolen funds were not insured and that affected users will have to bear the loss.
Ledger Live is a cryptocurrency management application used to store and manage digital currencies in Ledger hardware wallets. The legitimate application can only be downloaded from the official Ledger website.
Ledger users should be aware of phishing attacks and take steps to protect themselves. Here are some tips to protect yourself from phishing attacks:
🔸Only download cryptocurrency apps from trusted sources.
🔸Be careful with phishing links. If you are not sure if a link is legitimate, do not click on it.
🔸Use a strong password for your hardware wallet.
🔸Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for your hardware wallet.
🔸Ledger has released a security update for Ledger Live that blocks fake apps. Users must update their application to the latest version to protect themselves from these attacks.
