The Bitcoin community is currently busy debating whether or not the late cryptographer Len Sassaman is Satoshi Nakamoto ahead of the big reveal on HBO.
As U.Today reports, HBO is releasing a documentary on its way to revealing the identity of Bitcoin's legendary creator, potentially solving one of crypto's biggest mysteries.
The potentially groundbreaking documentary, created by prominent investigative filmmaker Colin Hoback, is set to premiere on Wednesday.
Late American privacy advocate Len Sassaman has emerged as the leading candidate for Satoshi, according to PolyMarket bookmakers. At press time, he had a 39.5% chance of being identified as Bitcoin’s creator by Hubback. Late cryptographer Hal Finney, who received the first Bitcoin transaction, and Blockstream CEO Adam Back, who was cited in the Bitcoin whitepaper, come in second and third with 8.6% and 8.7%, respectively.
Since Sassaman emerged as the obvious candidate, his name has attracted a lot of attention on social media.
He worked on the PGP encryption program alongside Bitcoin developer Hal Finney. Sassaman also collaborated with Back, who is known to be the first person to communicate with Satoshi as part of the replay community. It is also worth noting that David Chaum, known as the “Godfather of Cryptocurrency,” was Sassaman’s doctoral advisor. Sassaman had amassed a whopping 45 publications before his death. Bitcoin developer Gavin Andersen previously suggested that Satoshi was working in academia.
Sassaman, who had suffered from depression since his teenage years, committed suicide at the age of 31 in July 2011. A dedicated obituary for Sassaman is included on every node of the Bitcoin network.
It is worth noting that Sassaman's suicide coincided with Satoshi's disappearance from the Internet.
Recently, the subreddit r/Bitcoin has been abuzz with speculation about upcoming HBO documentaries. One commenter noted that Sassaman was actually posting disparaging opinions about Bitcoin back in 2011, but some see this as an attempt to maintain his anonymity and distance himself from the Satoshi persona.
Rumors of Sassaman being a Satoshi candidate have been circulating for a long time, and it remains to be seen whether HBO will be able to come up with some convincing evidence to prove that Sassaman is in fact the creator of Bitcoin.
At the same time, some commentators claim that they did not want Satoshi's identity to be discovered because they clearly had no interest in their identity being revealed.
