Citrea has launched its public testnet, creating a solution that allows Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) developers to access Bitcoin’s block space. The team believes that this testnet marks a significant step towards using Bitcoin as a payment layer for decentralized applications (DApps).

Citrea Launches Testnet to Bring Decentralized Finance to Bitcoin

Citrea's testnet is running on Bitcoin's Testnet4, providing a platform for developers to build decentralized applications (dapps) without sacrificing Bitcoin's autonomy. The project introduces a trust-minimized approach using BitVM and the Clementine bridge, allowing for secure connections of bitcoin (BTC) for use in decentralized finance (defi).

By opening up Bitcoin’s block space to EVM-compatible applications, Citrea aims to expand Bitcoin’s utility without relying on custodial solutions. Citrea’s infrastructure focuses on enhancing security and decentralization. The testnet supports multiple operator setups to minimize the risk of single points of failure. The network also tests anti-fraud mechanisms to detect and block malicious operators.

Citrea's bridge is designed for a 10 BTC fixed bridge system, with ongoing development to improve accessibility and support third-party solutions like atomic swaps to facilitate more flexible transactions. "Developers have begun building third-party solutions for swapping between BTC and cBTC (Bitcoin on Citrea)," Citrea's blog post states. "These third-party solutions aim to make bridging to Citrea more accessible and viable."

The Citrea team sees this launch as a major milestone in the development of the Bitcoin-powered economy. By allowing dapp developers to use BTC for payments, the project aims to promote financial inclusion and independence in a non-custodial manner. Citrea's ultimate goal is to extend the fundamentals of Bitcoin, providing a secure and censorship-resistant financial infrastructure for the global economy.
