🚨Brazil Escalates Pressure on X with Daily Fines Up to $11.5k for VPN Users
Brazil’s crackdown on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, is intensifying. Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes has mandated the “immediate and total suspension” of X in the country unless it adheres to all legal orders. Additionally, anyone caught using virtual private networks (VPNs) to access the platform faces a hefty daily fine of R$50,000 ($8,900).
The conflict between X and Brazil began in April, following Judge de Moraes' directive to suspend several accounts on X due to allegations of spreading misinformation. Despite the court’s orders, X resisted, with Elon Musk arguing that some of the accounts in question belonged to active Brazilian parliament members and journalists.
In a statement from X’s Global Government Affairs team, the platform revealed that when they tried to defend their stance in Brazilian courts, Judge de Moraes threatened the company’s legal representative with jail time. Even after she stepped down from her position, her bank accounts were frozen, and any appeals against the judge’s controversial actions were dismissed or ignored. X accused the Brazilian Supreme Court of failing to challenge Judge de Moraes’ aggressive measures.
Brazil's telecommunications regulator is moving forward with actions to suspend X within the country, as reported by Reuters. Furthermore, Judge de Moraes has instructed companies such as Apple and Google to remove X from their app stores in Brazil and block access to the platform on iOS and Android devices within five days.
