Thailand has launched the WORPT payment service, which allows eligible foreign tourists to convert USDT or USDC into Thai baht and pay by scanning local QR PromptPay codes. Merchants still receive payment in baht.

This means stablecoins are no longer limited to exchanges—they’re expanding into tourism, shopping, and cross-border payments.

However, the service is currently subject to eligibility restrictions. There is a 1.5% fee per conversion, and identity verification must be completed before use.

But note: this is not a full-scale rollout. WORPT is currently in Thailand’s SEC-regulated “Tourist DigiPay” sandbox, with KYC and anti-money laundering monitoring. The testing period can last up to 18 months, and the official launch is scheduled for November. Partners include Tether, The Mall Group, and Visa. A Visa prepaid card will also be introduced later, allowing users to scan and pay or swipe using the same baht balance.
