WestJet Strike Disrupts Hundreds of Flights During Canada’s Peak Travel Period

✈️ Around 4,300–4,400 WestJet flight attendants began a strike on August 2, prompting the airline to suspend most operations across its mainline network. WestJet Encore continues to operate selected routes.

📉 At least 309 flights have been cancelled, significantly affecting passengers during Canada’s long holiday weekend. Disruptions could increase further if negotiations remain unresolved.

💼 The dispute centres on demands for compensation covering all working hours, including boarding, safety checks and delay management, rather than primarily paying employees for time spent in the air.

🤝 WestJet has proposed a double-digit first-year wage increase and additional compensation for work outside flight hours, but the union says the offer remains insufficient. Negotiations are continuing as the federal government closely monitors the situation.
