A step-by-step guide for those who want to think like a "big player"
Most retail traders trade "horizontally": they look at the chart, draw lines, wait for indicator signals, and are very surprised when the market suddenly "breaks through" their ideal support and immediately reverses.
A market maker (a large bank, fund, or exchange-appointed MM) trades "vertically" — they see where your stops are, where the limits are clustered, where the majority of the crowd is sitting, and that's where they take the price.
Want to make money with them, not against them? Then you need to start thinking like them.
1. Understand the main goal of a market maker
Officially — to provide liquidity and a narrow spread.
Unofficially — to earn money on:
spreads and commissions;
collecting stop losses from retail traders;
accumulating/distributing large positions as cheaply/expensively as possible.
Therefore, MM does not chase the trend. It creates movement where there is the most "food" (stops and limits).
2. What a market maker actually looks at (and what you should look at)
Real glass (Depth of Market) + Footprint / Cluster chart / Volume Profile
Areas of maximum horizontal volume (POC, Value Area High/Low)
Clusters of stops (usually slightly below round levels and recent lows/highs)
COT reports, positioning in the futures market
Correlations between assets (e.g., USD/CAD ↔ oil ↔ S&P 500)
3. Classic market maker scenarios that you see every day
Stop Hunt scenario
The price stays in a range for a long time
A downward breakout appears (false breakout)
Short positions are collected below the low
Instant upward reversal and movement to the opposite end of the range
Squeeze + Expansion scenario
Prolonged flat → low volatility
Sharp narrowing of the spread and volumes
Sudden breakout in either direction on high volume
80% of traders open after the breakout and place stops at the previous level
Return and collection of these stops → real movement in the opposite direction
4. How to trade "together" with the market maker (practical rules)
Rule 1. Do not trade breakouts in the first 5-15 minutes. 70% are false.
Rule 2. Look for areas where volume is maximum (POC of old profiles) — that is where the MM will defend its position.
Rule 3. If the price approaches a strong level with high volume and starts to "flicker" (many candles with long shadows), the MM is collecting stops. Wait for confirmation of the reversal.
Rule 4. Always look at the higher timeframe. On D1/W1, you can see where MM is really accumulating and where it is just "playing."
Rule 5. If you see a perfect pattern (head and shoulders, double top, etc.) at a round level at a time of low liquidity — 90% chance that it is a trap.
5. A simple checklist before each trade "like MM"
Where are the POC and Value Area on the daily/weekly profile?
Where are the nearest clusters of volume below and above the current price?
Where are the majority of stops likely to be (slightly beyond the latest extremes)?
Is there a correlation with other markets that confirms the direction?
Is a 0.5–1% risk enough if I am wrong and get carried away with the crowd?
If you can answer these questions clearly, you are already thinking vertically.
