KAVA tokens are primarily used to reward Kava platform users who mint the native ecosystem stablecoin USDX. The stability of USDX is maintained through a system of collateralized loans, where KAVA tokens are used as collateral to back the stablecoin. If the value of the underlying KAVA collateral decreases, additional KAVA tokens must be added to maintain the stability of the USDX stablecoin. KAVA is also used in network governance functions to give users the ability to vote on ecosystem rules and policies that affect its direction.
Kava uses an optimized co-chain Layer-1 blockchain design that combines the architecture of Cosmos and Ethereum in its fundamental network make-up. The Kava protocol uses the Cosmos Tendermint Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism to achieve settlement and finality within its network.
The Tendermint scheme supports the co-chain environment of Cosmos and Ethereum, which gives Kava platform users access to swap dozens of assets for others, and engage in crypto lending and borrowing.
Kava Labs was co-founded by Brian Kerr, Ruaridh O’Donnel and Scott Stuart in 2018. The KAVA token was not launched until 2019, followed by the release of the Kava platform in 2020. Each of the Kava co-founders have documented backgrounds in business leadership positions.
KAVA is an inflationary token, so the maximum supply is not established. At the time of writing, the current circulating supply of KAVA tokens stands at 405,613,992. It is reported that 100 million KAVA tokens were initially issued through three private sale rounds done on the Binance Launchpad at the launch of the KAVA token.
The Kava protocol is capable of bridging assets not only on Ethereum and Cosmos, but also related networks like the BNB Smart Chain and others, built from the same underlying EVM network infrastructure.
