Tonight at 9 p.m., Kite will unlock 640 million tokens, worth roughly $75 million to $78.3 million at recent prices. KITE is trading at around $0.115 today. The team, advisors, and early contributors will receive 400 million tokens, while investors will receive 240 million. This is the first time insiders will receive tokens since the project launched a year ago.
First, what does Kite do? It’s an EVM-compatible Layer 1 built specifically for AI agent payments. AI agents get stuck when it comes time to pay for things: they don’t have identities of their own, spending limits, or a way to prove that their owner authorized a payment. Kite addresses this by giving agents verifiable identities through Passport, with separate user, agent, and session layers. Owners set the rules, and agents can spend only within those limits. Payments run through state channels, with only channel openings and closings recorded on-chain. The tiny transactions in between are processed quickly. The project says they take under 100 milliseconds and cost close to $0.000001 per transaction. Settlement is in stablecoins, and datasets, models, and tools can be listed for a fee on Modules.
Kite was formerly known as Zettablock and has raised $33 million in total. Its $18 million round in September 2025 was led by PayPal Ventures and General Catalyst. The token supply is 10 billion: 48% goes to the ecosystem and community, 20% to Modules, 20% to the team, advisors, and early contributors, and 12% to investors. According to Tokenomist’s schedule, core contributors have a 12-month cliff, followed by monthly releases over 36 months. The full schedule runs through 2030, and tonight’s unlock is the first batch after the cliff.
Different unlock calendars give different percentages. Some calculate it as 17.41% of the released supply, while others put it at over 40% of the circulating market cap. Tokenomist itself has marked this unlock as unverified, so I’d treat the $75 million to $78.3 million range as an estimate, not an exact figure. KITE is around $0.115 today, down more than 4% over 24 hours, with its March high near $0.32. An unlock doesn’t mean the tokens will be sold immediately, but the first insider unlock is worth watching for on-chain activity, especially whether the unlocking addresses send tokens to exchanges.
For retail investors, it’s important to distinguish between two things. First, has the story translated into actual usage? What Kite can point to so far is infrastructure like identity, channels, and settlement. Public materials don’t provide a reassuring figure for how many genuine paid transactions the Agent App Store and Passport are handling. Second, there’s the supply schedule. After tonight, insiders’ tokens will begin unlocking monthly, while the ecosystem’s 48% allocation is also being released over time. If demand can’t keep up with the pace of releases, the market will have to gradually absorb the supply, putting pressure on the price.
My view is that agent payments are worth keeping an eye on, and Kite’s approach of building identity, spending limits, and settlement into the chain is more tangible than projects that just talk about AI. But until tonight’s unlock has been absorbed, I’m sitting on the sidelines. I’ll wait to see what the unlocking addresses actually do on-chain before deciding what comes next.
Do you usually let AI automatically pay small expenses for you? If so, what spending limit would you feel most comfortable setting?
