Last night, when I was reading the privacy policy for @grvt_io , I stared for a long time at that ZK proof flowchart. Next to the coffee cup, there were three discarded draft sheets.

At first, I only cared about its execution speed and leverage multiplier. I thought privacy was just—multiple options, icing on the cake.

Until one morning past midnight, I reread the section about Validium and suddenly realized something was off. This design isn’t “adding” privacy—it’s “removing” a hidden camera I never even knew existed on other DEXs.

I used to think DEXes were transparent: everyone can see the order book. Isn’t that a good thing? But later I realized transparency doesn’t equal fairness.

If every limit order, every take-profit/stop-loss, and every position adjustment is exposed to the entire network, then whales and bots are like people standing behind you watching your moves. They can front-run, counter-attack, and plan ahead.
This feels like playing chess in a glass house while the other side sits outside the house. With every move you make, they can see it—and then turn around to tell the person they’re playing against in another room your route.

I read that privacy diagram twice before I slowly understood what Grvt is doing.
Many people think the privacy solution for #grvt is just hiding the data, but I’m more inclined to believe it’s building a system that “shows only the checkout receipt,” not the “shopping list.”

In ZKsync’s Validium architecture, it isolates the real order flow and position data off-chain, and only uploads the zero-knowledge proof for each transaction to the Ethereum mainnet.

In other words, the whole network can verify that your transaction really happened and the settlement is correct—but no one knows at what price, at what time, or how large your order was. It’s like taking a photo of your supermarket receipt and posting it online, but nobody can see which bottle of sauce you hesitated over in front of the shelf.

I even drew an arrow diagram, marking “off-chain data” and “on-chain proofs” in different colors, and that’s when I confirmed this isn’t just a technical gimmick.

Of course, whether this mechanism can hold up against MEV attacks under all market conditions is something I haven’t fully figured out yet.

But when I closed my laptop, a picture popped into my mind: if a previously fully on-chain DEX was like chess on the town square, then at least Grvt has brought you a tent—so you’re not operating in secret, you’re just able to act with peace of mind.
