Stellar Development Foundation describes Adapter as a builder-focused release, with CAP-85 and CAP-86 addressing practical problems faced by developers managing live contracts. One of the key changes is CAP-85. Applications that deploy many copies of the same smart contract can use an externally managed executable reference. Changing that shared reference allows participating contracts to move to updated code through a single atomic operation. That can be particularly useful during software upgrades or security fixes, because developers do not have to update every contract instance individually. CAP-86 addresses a different challenge: changing contract data structures. Its sparse-map host functions allow applications to work with missing or additional fields, giving developers more flexibility when migrating stored data to a new schema. The third major component, CAP-83, targets the consensus layer. It allows validators to make progress without necessarily waiting for an entire transaction set and introduces handling for late or invalid sets. Together, these changes make Protocol 28 primarily an infrastructure and developer update rather than a simple transaction-speed upgrade.
