The more I looked at Bitcoin's settlement model, the less subtle it became
Babylon is usually described as a protocol that lets native BTC secure Bitcoin Secured Networks without wrapping or bridging while Trustless Bitcoin Vaults make that same BTC usable across BTCFi without changing Bitcoin's UTXO custody model
I accepted that explanation quickly
What I couldn't explain was why TBV deliberately fragments collateral long before liquidation becomes necessary
Engineers rarely add more state unless they're protecting something that only breaks under pressure
Split Vaults divide collateral into Protected Vaults and Sacrificial Vaults so liquidation restores the Health Factor by consuming only the BTC required rather than treating an entire position as one liquidation event
Initially I thought that was simply capital efficiency
Now it feels more like preparation for asynchronous settlement
Bitcoin finality doesn't accelerate because a lending market becomes volatile
Execution does
The wider that timing gap becomes, the more expensive unnecessary liquidation becomes
Collateral granularity doesn't remove the mismatch between settlement and execution
It constrains how much collateral has to move before solvency is restored
That made me wonder if TBV is optimizing for coordination under timing constraints rather than liquidation itself
Under normal conditions that distinction is almost invisible
Under stress it probably isn't
If many vaults require deterministic recovery before Bitcoin settlement catches up, collateral quality may no longer define resilience
The harder limit may be whether the coordination needed to restore hundreds of independent Health Factors remains as predictable as Bitcoin's own settlement guarantees
Maybe trust hasn't become more concentrated
Maybe operational certainty has simply become more dependent on synchronization than I first assumed
