On September 8, Block submitted an application to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to open a national trust bank—Builders Bank & Trust. It will operate without deposit insurance, not accept deposits, and not make loans.

The goal is to shift some of Block’s operations for custody of Bitcoin, stablecoins, and other digital assets under direct federal oversight. In essence, it’s a bet on regulated crypto custody within the traditional U.S. banking system.

Alby confirmed a critical vulnerability in Alby Hub versions v1.7.0 and above. The bug affects self-hosted Lightning wallets—those where the user runs the node themselves on their computer or server.

The vulnerability would only trigger in one case: if the owner exposed access to their Hub to the internet. In this scenario, an attacker could intercept control of the wallet and withdraw funds without the owner’s permission. Alby has already released a fix and recommends that all users update as soon as possible.

Elliptic analysts traced the movement of funds on the blockchain, after which the US Treasury imposed sanctions on the platform, and the Secret Service froze $52.8 million in cryptocurrency. Xinbi functioned like a Telegram marketplace, through which money connected to global fraud schemes flowed.

Notably, the marketplace itself publicly declared the measures unjust— a rare reaction for structures like this.

$BTTC Liquid Network lost $320 million due to a code bug — the attacker returned the funds himself

A bug in the range-proof code in the Elements codebase allowed an unknown participant to mint uncollateralized L-BTC and withdraw through SideSwap 95% of the federation’s reserves — about 598.5 BTC. The network was frozen.

What’s notable is this: the attacker didn’t disappear with the money. Negotiations took place directly on-chain via OP_RETURN messages, and the funds were returned. It seems it was either a white-hat hacker or someone who realized that leaving with such a sum unnoticed wouldn’t be possible.

The incident raises serious questions about the security of sidechains and federated Bitcoin storage models.
